For most DriveTest centres, no appointment is required
Short answer: You can apply for and take an Ontario G1 knowledge test at a DriveTest centre without an appointment. Knowledge tests are first-come, first-served, so DriveTest recommends arriving at least one hour before the office closes.
Before you go
- Be at least 16 years old and an Ontario resident.
- Bring original identification that shows your legal name and date of birth. Review the official identity-document requirements before your visit.
- Bring your corrective lenses if you use them for driving.
- When applying, be prepared to declare that Ontario is your primary place of residence and that you are legally present in Canada.
- Use the official centre finder to confirm local hours, services, disruptions, and accessibility before you travel.
What happens at the centre
- Apply for your licence and show your original identification.
- Complete the vision test with a customer service agent.
- Pay the applicable fee.
- Take the knowledge test.
- Receive your result immediately after the test is marked.
A foreign licence or driving-experience document is not part of the standard G1 checklist. It may matter for a separate licence-exchange or experience-credit process, so confirm that situation with DriveTest directly.
How the G1 knowledge test works
The test is multiple choice. DriveTest offers paper tests at all locations and computer tests at some locations. It is not timed, although you must finish before the office closes.
A Class G1 knowledge test typically takes 20 to 30 minutes and has two or three sections, such as road signs and rules of the road. You need a total score of at least 80% to pass. Class G1 tests are offered in 32 languages.

Current costs and retries
DriveTest currently lists the Class G1 licence package at $159.75. It includes one knowledge test, the Class G2 road test, and a five-year licence. An extra knowledge-test attempt is listed at $16.00.
Fees can change, so check the official DriveTest fee list before you go. If you are unsuccessful, you can pay to try again. Results are valid for one year, and within that period you only need to retake sections that did not meet the required standard.
After you pass
A customer service agent issues a temporary paper licence that is valid for 90 days. Your G1 is the first stage of Ontario's graduated licensing system. The G2 and G road tests are later steps that do require booking.
