Key Ontario parking restrictions
Ontario's official driver's handbook sets minimum distances for places where parking is not allowed. Last reviewed: August 25, 2026.
- within 3 metres of a fire hydrant;
- within 9 metres of an intersection without traffic lights;
- within 15 metres of an intersection controlled by traffic lights;
- within 15 metres of the nearest rail of a level railway crossing; or
- on a curve, hill, or anywhere you cannot see clearly for at least 125 metres in both directions.
Local parking signs and by-laws can be stricter
Municipal parking signs and by-laws can add restrictions beyond the handbook. Look for posted no-parking, no-stopping, loading-zone, and time-limit signs wherever you leave a vehicle.
When a sign or local rule is more restrictive than the general rule, follow the local restriction.
