What the G1 knowledge test covers
Ontario's G1 test is for new drivers aged 16 or older. At a DriveTest centre, you complete a vision screening and a multiple-choice knowledge test on road rules and traffic signs.
What happens after you pass
After you pass, you receive a G1 licence and can begin supervised driving. You must be accompanied by a qualified driver with at least four years of driving experience, maintain zero blood alcohol, and follow Ontario's other G1 conditions.
You cannot drive between midnight and 5 a.m. or on 400-series highways and certain other high-speed expressways unless accompanied by a certified driving instructor.
When can you take the G2 road test?
You normally need to hold a G1 licence for at least 12 months before the G2 road test. An MTO-approved beginner driver education course can reduce the waiting period to eight months.
